How to transpose music to a different key

Transposing means moving every note by the same distance so the relationships between them stay identical. The tune sounds the same, only higher or lower. It takes three steps: decide the interval, move every chord and note by it, then fix the key signature — and for chords the whole job fits on one line of numbers.

The method, in three steps

1. Find the interval. From C to E flat is a minor third up; from G to D is a fifth up, or a fourth down — the same destination in a different octave. Decide which direction the voice or instrument needs.

2. Move everything by it. Every chord root, every melody note. C–Am–F–G moved up a minor third becomes E♭–Cm–A♭–B♭. Chord qualities never change: a minor chord stays minor, a seventh stays a seventh.

3. Change the key signature. C major has none; E flat major has three flats. Once the signature is right, accidentals inside the piece follow the same shift.

The chord chart, by numbers

The fastest way to transpose chords is to convert them to numbers first. Give each degree of the scale a Roman numeral: in C major, C is I, Dm is ii, Em is iii, F is IV, G is V, Am is vi.

C–Am–F–G becomes I–vi–IV–V. Now read those numerals in any key: in G it is G–Em–C–D; in D it is D–Bm–G–A; in E flat it is E♭–Cm–A♭–B♭.

That single conversion replaces every chart, because the numbers are the chart. It is also why session musicians write numbers rather than letters — a key change costs nothing when the notation is key-independent.

For a quick manual shift on guitar, counting frets works too: each fret is a half step, so moving a progression up three frets moves it up a minor third.

On guitar: the capo does it for you

A capo raises everything by one half step per fret while the shapes stay put. Play the G shapes with a capo at the third fret and the song sounds in B flat.

That is why guitar-written songs so often end up in keys awkward to read: they were written in open shapes and moved for the singer. Keeping the shapes and changing the key is almost always better than the reverse.

The exception is playing with others. A capo changes what you hear but not what you call the chords, so tell the band the sounding key — «capo three, playing G shapes, so we are in B flat» — or the bass player will be a minor third away.

Transposing instruments

Some instruments sound a different note from the one written. A B flat clarinet playing a written C produces a B flat; an E flat alto saxophone playing a written C produces an E flat.

The convention exists so that a player can move between instruments of the same family — soprano, alto, tenor — without relearning the fingerings. The written note stays, the instrument does the transposition.

For a score, that means the parts and the sounding pitch differ. To write a concert C for a B flat trumpet, notate a D — up a whole tone. Getting the direction backwards is the classic arranging mistake, and the check is simple: a B flat instrument's written C sounds lower, so the written part must be higher.

Doing it in your head

For chords, think in numerals rather than letters. Once a progression is I–V–vi–IV, transposing is reading it in another key rather than calculating anything.

For melody, think in scale degrees. A tune that goes 1–3–5–3 goes 1–3–5–3 in every key; the notes change and the shape does not.

For reading at sight in a new key, the trick most players use is to shift the clef mentally rather than each note — reading a passage in C as if it were in the target key, adjusting the signature by habit. It takes practice, and it is the only method that survives at speed.
